Description

Practice Two Digit by two digit Multiplication Using Area Models for 4th Grade Math: Use for distance learning or print for use in the classroom. This area model multiplication math activity is to be used for a quick check for understanding. It is a one-page matching activity with ten problems. There is a Google Slide® digital version, which is perfect for distance learning, as well as a pdf version that can be printed.

What standard does this activity check for? Multiply two two-digit numbers: 4.NBT.B.5 : In this activity students will ONLY be multiplying two digits by two digits. They are directed to use the area model strategy.

Why just one page with 10 problems? It is intended to be a quick check for basic understanding of concepts. Also, I have found that when using Google Slides® in Google Classroom®, the slides can be quite time consuming to grade when each slide presents one problem and you have to scroll through ten slides for ten problems and then do that for 25 kids. I decided to put ten problems on one page and use some color coding for easier grading. I have also found that for distance learning, I need to be able to tell if kids understand the basic concept, which means keeping the activity 'simple' and to the point.

**What are the student directions for the digital multiplication activity?** Multiply to find each part of the area model. Drag a yellow number to the correct box on the area models. Use notebook paper to add the numbers. Drag a blue number to each line to show the final product for the problems. Example: 36 x 45=

What about the directions for the printable version of the activity? Multiply to find each part of the area model. Glue the correct number to cover the missing numbers on the area models. Use notebook paper to add the numbers. Glue a number on the line to show the final product.

What formats are included?

  • A digital version is included that is a one-page Google Slide® with ten problems. Students drag the correct answer to the matching problem. This will work great for use in Google Classroom.® Students will complete the matching activity by dragging the correct answer to the correct spot to. You are given a link within the pdf file where you are directed on how to make a copy of the slide. It will then be saved into your Google Drive®. You will make a copy for each student, so they can submit their own answers. The digital version is perfect for distance learning or for a small group math center activity within the classroom.

  • The same activity is included as a printable pdf. Because it is a matching activity, I have included cut/paste answer choices where students can glue the answer in the correct spot rather than dragging it like they would with the digital version. This version is perfect to use for a math center or for a quick formative assessment for understanding. The actual activity on the file is color, but you can set your printer to print black and white to save ink. Then when you turn in your copies for your class they will be printed in black and white.

Can this area model multiplication activity be used for a grade? I include ten problems on this activity, so I feel it is suitable for a grade. It's a perfect 'easy' grade to check for basic understanding of the concept. I have included an answer key for the teacher. The Google Slide answers, as well as the answer key use color coding which makes for easy grading. Because all problems are presented on one Google Slide, it takes limited time to grade, which is a huge plus!
