How can I use interactive notebooks in my second grade classroom?
There are many ways to use interactive notebooks to support learning. In my own classroom, I introduce an ELA skill at the beginning of the week. We then discuss it together as a whole class and create an anchor chart with definitions and examples. Students then complete the interactive notebook page as an independent literacy center. I check over this work and meet with students who have demonstrated misconceptions or made errors. Another option is to complete the pages together when the skill is first introduced.
Either way, students’ notebooks become a great reference tool they take ownership of and go back to throughout the year. Whenever we are reviewing a skill in my classroom, you are sure to see notebooks out on desks or center tables.
As an added bonus, regular cutting and pasting strengthen fine motor skills!
Please note that these pages are intended for use in a standard size single subject notebook (8 1/2 x 11 sized pages). Most will be a bit too large to fit in a composition-size notebook without adjustments to your printer settings.
