Description

These are 96 different vocabulary task cards for third grade. Students will use context clues in the sentences to determine the meaning of words. This skill is common core aligned, so that students must use their understanding of words and language to inference meanings of challenging words.

This specific set is aimed at third grade. However, the task cards could also be a challenging extension for stronger second grade readers, or a review for older students in 4th or 5th grade. Students struggling with reading who require specialized instruction or intervention services may also benefit from using these task cards to improve their reading skills.

No Prep!
The cards are split into 6 different colored sections: blue, pink, green, orange, purple, and yellow. Each section includes a student-friendly answer key so that students can check their work on their own. Also, two different student response forms are also included. This means there is absolutely no prep for the teacher. The cards are printable and easy to use.

How to Use Task Cards
- Set up reading/literacy centers. One center can be task cards. Students can check their own work with the answer keys, as needed.
- Partner students up and have students take turns reading and answering the task cards. Students should be encouraged to check each others’ answers.
- Group students in 3 or 4 to discuss and answer the task cards. Students must come to an agreement on a word before moving on.
- Partner students up with games (Connect Four, Scrabble, etc.). Students can take a turn after they correctly answer one of the task cards.
- Use a particular task card to model for the class. Then, give similar task cards for group work on independent work.
- Go around the room and have students randomly select a task card for them and their partner to answer. They will discuss and answer the card.
- Have students follow up to any of these activities by writing their own task card for context clues. Students can then give their task cards to a partner to solve.
- Have students solve a task card independently or with a group, then defend and explain their answer to a partner or group.
Use as a “Do Now” for morning work right when students enter the room.
- Use as an activity when students finish their work early.
