Algebraic Equations: Pan Balance Task Cards: Challenge your students to think outside the box with these algebraic equations: pan balance task cards! A great way to practice critical thinking skills! There are 40 task cards of varying difficulty perfect for grades 4-6. The task cards look best printed in color but will also print fine in black and white. Also included are a set of blank task cards for students to create their own pan balances, two student recording sheets (grayscale) and two answer keys.
These task cards work great in a math center. Simply print out the cards, laminate, cut out and rubber band together or hole punch and attach them to a ring. Print and laminate the student recording sheets and answer keys and keep them all in a manila envelope in your math center. Students can use vis-à-vis markers to cross off or circle equal groups of objects from the pan balances and then erase their marks after they have recorded their answers. Include the answer key in the math center so students can self-correct. ★ Tip for Struggling Students: ★
Make this activity more concrete by having students make their own balances by using two pieces of paper to represent each side of the balance and then find small manipulatives such as teddy bear counters, paper clips, etc. to represent the objects. Then have students set up the problem on each task card and solve!
