What educators are saying

This was a great activity to teach about different types of beaks. The older kids loved it and the younger kids wanted to participate. Cant wait to use this again!
This was a great companion activity to our unit on animal adaptations. Students worked together to complete this to cut down on materials, but they really enjoyed it.

Description

Animal Adaptations Busy Beaks Fun Hands On STEM Investigation Activity

This hands on “Busy Beaks” activity is a fun way for students to learn about animal adaptations. Students test four different types of “beaks” to learn how birds are adapted to their environment.

This hands on investigation includes:

A 15 slide PowerPoint presentation which can be used to teach or evaluate the students’ knowledge about the function of various bird beaks.

A “Busy Beaks” data chart which allows students record the number of items captured by each of their four beaks.

A “Busy Beaks graph form which enables students to bar graph showing their results.

A “Busy Beaks” Exit Slip which allows you to evaluate your lesson and provides meaningful feedback.

My students really enjoy this activity. It teaches them how each bird's beak is adapted for for specific foods. I have included my instructions, but you can change the materials and procedures to meet your needs. This fun hands on activity is a great way for students to experience how adaptations help an animal survive.

NGSS2-LS4-1
Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. Emphasis is on the diversity of living things in each of a variety of different habitats. Assessment does not include specific animal and plant names in specific habitats.
NGSS3-LS4-2
Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing. Examples of cause and effect relationships could be plants that have larger thorns than other plants may be less likely to be eaten by predators; and, animals that have better camouflage coloration than other animals may be more likely to survive and therefore more likely to leave offspring.
