What’s included in this apples unit?

This “All About Apples” thematic unit includes materials to help you integrate learning about apples into science, social studies, and literacy in your primary classroom. Your students will learn while having fun as they engage in an apple taste test, make an apple craft, and wear a life cycle crown!

Here’s what’s included:

Informational PowerPoint Slideshow “All About Apples”

This slideshow is packed full of information about apples. Packed with clear photographs, this presentation includes nonfiction text about the life cycle of apples (apple trees through the seasons), the parts of an apple, products made from apples, Johnny Appleseed, and other fun and interesting facts. This PowerPoint slideshow is 13 slides long and is copied at the end of the PDF in addition to the PPT file (for those without access to PowerPoint).

Apple Vocabulary Word Posters and Word Wall Cards

The included vocabulary word posters, each with a photo and a simple definition are: pollination, orchard, harvest, farmers market, and fruit. The word wall cards, each with an illustration, are: apple, core, stem, seeds, skin, flesh, apple tree, blossom, orchard, apple pie, apple sauce, apple cider, bushel basket, Johnny Appleseed, caramel apple

Anchor Chart Materials and Posters

Printable materials are included to help you create meaningful apple anchor charts with your students. You’ll find what you need to make an apples KWL chart, an “Are, Have, Make” chart, and an “Apple Taste Test” graph. In addition, this set includes a “Parts of an Apple” poster, an “Apple Life Cycle” poster, and a short, illustrated life cycle poem to display.

Printable Apple Activities

Taste Test: This activity includes a parent letter requesting apple donations, class graph materials, and two differentiated apple taste test reflection sheets.

Informational Writing Materials: In addition to writing organizers, this set includes various apple-themed lined writing sheets and book templates.

Apple Science Activities: Students can complete a cut and glue labeling page and a five senses observation sheet as they explore apples. This section also includes an "Apple Treats" handwriting page and life cycle writing materials.

Apple Foldable Book: This informational easy reader is designed to be printed double-sided, using only one sheet of paper. Students can color the pictures and practice reading and print concepts. This book has one simple sentence per page.

Apple Life Cycle Craft and Crown: Materials are included for students to make an apple craft (life cycle wheel) as well as a life cycle crown. A Johnny Appleseed version of the crown is included as well.

Apple Literacy & Math Activities: With varied difficulty, these printable pages allow students to practice using the color words red, green, and yellow in sentences, to read simple passages followed by comprehension questions, and to practice math skills (counting, teen numbers, simple addition and subtraction).

How do I use this "All About Apples" unit?

Begin by accessing students’ background knowledge about apples by having a class discussion. As you discuss, fill in the “K” (What I Know) and “W” (What I Want to Know) columns of the KWL chart. Follow up with the PowerPoint slideshow, which can be read aloud in one sitting or can be used across several days. Young children will need time to discuss the information as it is presented, so be sure to build in time for conversations and questions! Upon completion of the PowerPoint (or as you go along), have students help fill in the final column of the KWL chart.

To guide students toward informational writing about apples, begin with the “Are, Have, Make” chart, having the students help determine what you should write in each section (a sample chart is included). Students can then begin to work on their own organizers which will scaffold them toward writing three informational sentences about apples.

The other activities (apple craft and crown, reading comprehension and literacy activities, apple taste test and five senses exploration, apple parts page) can be completed in any order (and you can pick and choose based on the needs and levels of your students.
