Description
I created this FREE set of Author's Purpose test prep passages for teachers who want to teach their students the more advanced version of Author's Purpose: PIE'ED! It includes five passages about penguins. After reading the passages, students choose the author's purpose for writing each passage from a multiple-choice list of options. Teachers print these pages to complete with their entire class, or they can assign them to students to complete independently.

********This resource is available in THREE FORMATS:
1. TRADITIONAL PRINTABLES- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
2. TPT EASEL ACTIVITY- Students complete this version on a device. Students read each passage and answer the multiple-choice question that follows by moving the red circle to select their answer.
2. GOOGLE SLIDES ACTIVITY- Page 6 of the PDF contains the Google Slides link.
In the past, I taught the PIE method. One year, however, I was providing testing accommodations to my ELLs by reading the test questions aloud. My heart sank when I read aloud the questions related to author's purpose. I found that the multiple-choice answer options included much more than just persuade, inform, and entertain. Needless to say, I decided to make my own author’s purpose materials to use the next school year- worksheets, games, activities, and task cards – that I felt better prepared my students for the types of questions they would find on standardized tests, and that matched the lesser known “PIE’ED method.” I hope that you find this set of five passages useful, too, and your students find themselves better prepared for standardized tests.
