What educators are saying

Love all books by Kwame Alexander. This resource had a plethora of resources to work on with a student I was tutoring.

Description

This is a student workbook designed to accompany Booked by Kwame Alexander's novel, Booked.
BOOKED has a couple different connotations! Booked is a free verse novel that will engage your students and bring a new appreciation for words! The novel is fresh in its approach and has a sports theme, as well as divorce, bullying and growing up. The main character is learning how to stay "above the water" and face the things life is throwing at him. What would YOU do if you weren't afraid? Great question, right!? Nick faces that very question. In addition to all of this, there is a unique appreciation of words and their POWER! I love this book and highly recommend it to your class!
This 24 page student workbook offers critical thinking activities when they are challenged to refer to what they read and make inferences. Using analytical skills, students will be putting into action and pictures the words on a page. Problem solving skills will help students create and discover blackout poetry! A reference to a nonfiction reading selection also makes a connection to the novel and real life. In addition, the students will be asked to do some research to find and answer questions.
The Workbook includes a scavenger hunt, cartoon drawings as they sequence events in the book, figures of speech, vocabulary, retelling facts, and writing solid paragraphs with basic steps. A link to an American Classic novel, and a famous speech are also provided. If your students have an enjoyment of this book style, other books written in the same manner are offered for their convenience.
The workbook covers key ideas and details, craft & structure of the novel, and the integration of knowledge and ideas. The vocabulary has a huge impact on the understanding of the power and special use of words. I am sure YOU will even learn new words, I know I did!!
AN Answer key is provided for your convenience in the back of the book.

If you like Kwame Alexander's writing style, he also wrote a novel called CROSSOVER in free verse too! I've made a study guide for that one as well and you can find it: The Crossover Novel Study Guide
