I have marked this for grades 3-5, but some third graders that have weaker reading skills might need help on some words, such as words like echolocation.

This is perfect for fall, especially for October as you near Halloween. Of course it doesn't mention Halloween, so it can be used any time you are reading or studying bats.

This is not just any 'ole puzzle. It doesn't just include words. It includes facts about bats that your students will enjoy reading. I call it a 'fact find'. Within each fact, a word (or words) is underlined. Those are the words the students will find in the puzzle. For example, one sentences says, "Bats are mammals." The word 'mammals' is underlined and that is the word they will find.

In this bat themed word search puzzle, words are found forward, backward, up, down, and diagonal. I would consider it on the challenging side since students are looking for words diagonally and backwards, and because they will practice reading skills.

I use word searches to introduce vocabulary, or even just give it as morning work. They are also great to use in writing. Perfect for a sub, too.

There are many options for using this word search 'fact find'.

One option is to have students partner up and practice fluency. They can take turns reading the sentences. This can be used for a writing activity. Have them take the facts from the puzzle and turn them into a paragraph, changing out some of the words to make it their own. Use it as a reading homework assignment, too. Parents can work with their child to find the words. Feel free to be creative and use it in your classroom however you would like.

The bat themed words included in the word search are:

insects

blood

migrate

nocturnal

flying fox

upside down

carnivorous

hibernate

solitary

webbed

echolocation

mammals

mosquitoes
