Description

Black History Month: Motivate and inspire your students as they recognize these famous people in history. This is a 'Kids Connecting to Quotes" pack where every quote was spoken by a famous African American. This pack uses the same format as my Quote of the Week Pack, which can be found HERE.

For this Black History Month quote reflections pack, students are presented with 7 different quotes. For each quote, students read it, think about it, write what they think it means, and then they write how they can apply it to their life. This is a 2 page activity sheet, printing on the front and back if you choose to use all 7 quotes. You could just use the front if you are limited on time.

I have also included all 7 quotes on an 8.5 x 11 (portrait view) sheet with a colored background. You can project these as you discuss or even hang them on a bulletin board along with the activity sheets the kids complete. In addition, the posters are great to refer to for the last half of the year.

My thinking with this activity is for students to complete it individually and then come back to the group to discuss it with the class or a small group. Of course, you could have the kids partner up or work in small groups. Simply have them complete it however you would like.

There is no answer key because students are writing the meanings in their own words. As long as they can defend how they determined the meaning, then it should be correct.

I don't really see this as a graded activity, it's more to be used to build morale/character and provide something for your students to reflect on as they progress into the second half of the school year. Hopefully these quotes will give them something positive to think about. In addition, you can refer back to these quotes if needed.

For example, one of the quotes is "“Surround yourself with people that take you higher.” (by Oprah Winfrey) Later on in the year, if a student is having friendship problems or if someone is being 'mean', this might be a quote to refer back to.

Be creative! Feel free to use these in your classroom however you would like.

Please, if you ever notice I have overlooked anything (typos, things like that) please send me a message before you rate the product. I try to double check, but it is possible for me to miss something small from time to time. I can get it corrected in a jiffy. Thanks so much! :-) It is greatly appreciated.
