Material in this chapter was written to give future elementary and math education majors an introduction to a variety of strategies for solving application problems.
Key facts to remember:
1. Not everyone thinks the same.
2. Not every problem needs to be worked using the same strategy. I'm sure you will be amazed at some of the strategies discussed in this chapter that you were not aware of.
3. Encouraging mental work will improve a student's thinking and problem-solving skills.
4. Requiring students to show all work may hinder the development of thinking and problem-solving skills for many students. Students begin to act like a robot, and we know robots can't think for themselves.
