What educators are saying

We loved using this resource to accompany our weekly phonics skills. In addition, the poems were a perfect addition to our fluency routines. The kids kept the poems in the Fluency section of their reading binders for rereading.
These are fun poems. I have used some of your poems before and I can't wait to make them a part of my small group activities.

This bundle contains my two, all-time best selling poetry products--to save you money and to spread the poetry joy. Over 1,400 5-star ratings and amazing feedback. Each product is priced at $5, so this is a huge savings. But, it is my pleasure to offer them this way to get these fun poems into more students' hands. Included in the two products are fluency pages that correspond with each poem and some form of word work (corresponding word sorts and word wall cards-details below). Poetry for Phonics & Fluency Fun

Poetry All Year: Cross Curricular Rhymes with Fluency & Word Work

Specifics about POETRY FOR PHONICS FUN:

You and your students will love these giggle-worthy original poems for short and long vowels, variant vowels, consonant digraphs and blends PLUS corresponding word work (word sorts), fluency practice (formatted for timed, repeated readings and performances), word wall cards and best tips for implementation= NO PREP INTEGRATION at its best (see note in parentheses below). I love writing poems and using them in my classroom! They always delight students and can serve as wonderful, authentic contexts for word and fluency work.

(Remember, the brain learns best when what we are teaching is connected. This product helps you integrate shared, repeated and independent reading with phonics and fluency instruction. Put the Word Wall cards on a foam display board, and you now have a constant scaffold for students who need more repetition as they move toward automaticity. Here's to integration!)

I know you probably already have poems for teaching phonics, after all, they are so fun and effective to use. But, you can always use more! The more varied contexts students are exposed to, the more they are likely to become automatic with spelling-sound patterns. The long vowel poems contain the most frequent spelling patterns for the vowel--GREAT for teaching, reinforcing and using as a stimulus to hunt for other words with these common patterns. Plus, as you know, reading and rereading these types of poems does wonders for students' reading fluency. Now, with the added fluency practice, you can do some of this work in class and/or send it home for reinforcement!

Specifics for POETRY ALL YEAR: CROSS CURRICULAR RHYMES WITH FLUENCY AND WORD WORK:

This K-2 resource includes sixteen perfect, kid-approved, cross-curricular poems you’ll love! Teach about health, safety, holidays, life cycles, plants, animals, insects, weather, seasons, and subtraction with delightful rhymes and rhythms! Use the accompanying pages to practice fluency (each poem’s lines are numbered and there is a grid at the bottom of the page for recording reading rate for up to five repeated readings). I’ve included an explicit, detailed, step-by-step teaching procedure you might follow for working on fluency using the poems. Additionally, you’ll find a copy of a “Fluency Poster” I post in my classroom and refer to during fluency lessons.

You’ll also get ready-made rime/chunk flash cards you can use to teach and reinforce words right from the contexts of the poems. These can be used for all kinds of word work (I describe several alternatives in the resource) and for posting on your Word Wall.

Common Core Standards Aligned.

The packet opens with a six page, explicit introduction full of ideas for effectively using the resource. This includes:

*Common Core State Standards connections

*Teaching content using the poems

*Shared reading using the poems

*Ideas for using “Favorites Folders.” Students mark up & highlight on their personal copies then keep them in folders for rereading during reading workshop, ‘read the room,’ or ‘Read to Self/Partner’ time

*An explicit lesson routine for fluency practice involving ‘colored reading rounds’

*A class ‘poster’ detailing the aspects of fluency

*Ideas for Using the Rime/Chunk Cards: for centers; word hunts; cut, mix & make; for mastery by ‘passing them off;’ Word Walls and spelling lists

Info about the poems: *

Sixteen original, clever cross-curricular poems your students will love. The poems range in complexity based on the content, word difficulty and length. For example, content varies from the simple: colors, animal sounds…to the complex: the scientific method and animal behavior (birds and mammals caring for their young). Length varies from 29 words up to 105. You might differentiate use of the different poems based on the needs of your readers. Regardless, the rhymes are guaranteed to delight! You’ll love them for read-alouds, shared reading, repeated readings and reinforcing the content we K-2 teachers teach. The integrated fluency and word work is a bonus!

Everything you need is ready to go! Just print and teach! Enjoy! -Janiel
