Description

This product targets phonemic development of CVC words using hands-on activities that suit both intervention and consolidation.

This product contains 4 matching sets of 45 CVC words (see list in PREVIEW):

  • - Picture with matching word
  • - Picture with matching word but missing short vowel
  • - Picture with no word
  • - Word with no picture

It also contains:

- CVC Donkey Card Games (Sets 1 and 2))

- 5 A4 Posters (Short vowels)

- Quick Literacy Placement Screen with Resource List

All the cards are uniform in size so you can mix and match to suit your needs. You can:

1. Match picture only and word only cards (use pegs or paper slides)

2. Write the word with the missing vowel

3. Sort the picture and word cards into their short vowel sounds

4. Sort the picture cards to target specific skills, e.g., beginning sounds, terminal sounds

5. Write the word from the picture card only (provide paper with three blank boxes for this)

6. Consolidate with games such as Memory, Fish, DONKEY or WORD DETECTIVE

Words Used in DONKEY Set 1 (Included)

hat/cat/mat/bat/rat/pat, bed/red, jet/net, ten/den, hem/gem, leg/beg, lid/hid, fig/big, fin/bin, hit/kit, zip/hip, cot/dot, dog/log, hot/pot, hop/mop, cob/rob, tub/cub, mud/bud, cut/hut, jug/bug

Words used in DONKEY Set 2 (Included)

fat/vat, van/fan, bag/wag, cap/tap, ham/jam, men/hen, wet/vet, wed/fed, lip/dip, pin/tin, sit/pit, rib/bib, rip/tip, cop/top, pod/rod, rot/pot, fog/jog, job/mob, run/gun, rug/mug, gum/hum, nut/cut

I have also made little Post Boxes to help discrimination and add novelty. I target the sound or sounds to be mastered, label the boxes and the student/s 'posts' the cards accordingly. I have since made the pockets and included them in this product if you would like to use them. Alternatively, you can use paper plates. This would be a good small group activity with members looking for a different vowel sound from the picture cards. I have an extended SORT IT CVC product (185 word/picture cards) to accommodate the needs of a more diverse class. The extended product has been developed with differentiation in mind. It also comes in a bundle with more games to further facilitate hands-on intervention or extension and would be ideal as a school-wide resource.

Sorting the cards contributes to the multi-sensory nature of this activity which is especially important for beginners or those experiencing difficulty with phonemic discrimination. They see the word, they say/hear the word then they actively place the card according to the sound. I have added the A4 Vowel Posters which you can use for extra scaffolding for those who need it.

Each incremental step develops phonemic awareness and builds confidence in reading and writing CVC words. SORT IT cards and DONKEY cards are uniform so you can mix and match, especially for intervention where DONKEY cards can be used for explicit teaching prior to being used for consolidation as a game. Transferring the game to the classroom promotes generalisation of context and contributes to inclusive practice.

This is a critical area of skill development and is one of the building blocks of successful reading.
