Description

Need a no-prep lesson to help students choose a career and start the career planning process? Get this interactive Google Slides career exploration lesson that includes an introduction to a career interest inventory (the John Holland RIASEC test), the Myers-Briggs personality test, and the Japanese concept of Ikigai, or life purpose.

⭐️ Click here for the Pear Deck version of this same presentation in my store!

⭐️ This product is a COMPLETE LESSON in one place (similar to a Hyperdoc, which takes students through the learning cycle in one doc or slide deck using hyperlinks and other media). Perfect for using as a differentiated, self-paced, student-centered lesson and/or whole class presentation!

⭐️ This interactive Google Slides presentation can be used with distance learning, face-to-face instruction, OR a hybrid approach in an English language arts, AVID, advisory, or related class. Counselors can also use it to give a career readiness presentation to a large class or at a meeting or help students one-on-one or in small groups. The time it takes for the entire lesson will vary depending on how much discussion and other extension activities you include. Instructional time also depends on your students’ levels, but just getting through the slides should take about an hour with discussions included.

⭐️ I highly recommend also getting my Career Exploration Interactive Worksheets to follow/extend this lesson and help students with the five steps suggested in this presentation. Once students have gone through the five steps to choose a career, I would assign them my Career Research Interview Project!

⭐️ Save money and get my Career Exploration Bundle that includes this interactive Google Slides presentation on how to choose a career, the Career Exploration Interactive Worksheets, and the Career Research Interview Project! Want more? Get this even bigger Career Readiness Bundle, which includes all of the above PLUS a resume, cover letter, and job interview lesson!

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • This product comes as a PDF document with instructions and suggestions for use and a link to a copy of the interactive Google Slides presentation.
  • There are questions at the beginning of the Google Slides presentation to activate students’ prior knowledge and higher-level questions at the end to stimulate critical thinking on the topic and ideas presented.
  • The presentation will open in Google Slides, but you could also download the presentation to PowerPoint without losing any of the formatting.
  • This is an interactive presentation! e.g., It includes links with more information, and students can type their responses to the given questions directly on the slides (if you share a copy of the slides with your students).
  • There is almost no prep needed except figuring out how you will differentiate if needed and deciding how to extend the lesson, but I have some ideas included to make it super easy for you!

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

1. Present the slides in a face-to-face lecture OR through a video conference lecture by sharing your screen. To make your presentation more interactive and engaging (and less of a teacher-centered lecture), be sure to have students answer the questions and share their answers to any questions given in the presentation (ideas for discussion and sharing are included), stop to check comprehension, use peer teaching, and clarify or explain anything as needed.

2. OR, depending on your students’ levels, you can just send the slides to your students by email, Google Classroom, or another platform to work on independently or in small groups and type their answers on the slides, a Google Form, or a separate document (e.g., Jamboard) -- whichever you prefer (make sure you make a copy of the slides for each student).

3. Do a combination of #1 and 2. You may also want to work one-on-one with some students and let others work independently.

4. Follow the included lesson plan and extra ideas.

This lesson has it all!

-Explicit instruction

-21st-century skills

-Multi-modalities

Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9–10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions.
