Description
The novel Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a fabulous middle school class novel. However, it does have some vocabulary words that may confuse the average middle-school readers -- words such as sovereign, insolence, gentry, victuals, contraband, and more.
This vocabulary list contains 36 vocabulary words from the novel, carefully chosen so as to contain words that are still used in modern-day English and will help students in the future. It is divided into three lists:
12 words from the first third of the novel (Ch. 1-17);
12 words from the second third of the novel (Ch. 18-23);
12 words from the final third of the novel (Ch. 34-45).
Each word has:
a definition in easy-to-understand language;
the sentence from the book that this words is used in;
a second additional example sentence using the word to give students added context.
This is formatted so that you can go over it orally in class, or give students a handout to use individually.
