Description
By now you know that dual language resources are essential to support our ESL students as they return back to school. “Chinese to English ESL Newcomer Activities - Days of the Week" builds student vocabulary to enhance the development of English speaking and reading skills in ESL Chinese newcomers. This Chinese to English ESL newcomers activities resource also includes bilingual (Chinese to English) conversation questions to facilitate using the days of the week vocabulary.
Chinese to English ESL newcomer activities:
1.First, give each Chinese ESL newcomer a copy of the worksheet. Observe the students to see if they recognize some of the words.
2.Find the cognates. Read each day of the week slowly. Let the students quietly repeat the word. Then have the student silently read the word in Chinese. Ask the students which words on the English list sound similar to the word in Chinese. Verify the cognates on the word list. Concentrate on these first because they will be the easiest for students to learn.
3.Play a listening game. In random order, say a day from the list as your Chinese ESL students scan their list and circle the word.
4.Play a speaking game. Use the conversation questions. Ask the ESL Chinese students the questions, and also have the students practice asking and answering the questions with each other.
5.Use for spelling tests. As the students learn the English days of the week, they should also learn how to spell them.
