Description
Use this activity and game to teach and practice coping strategies for managing difficult emotions. Kids and young adults will complete a student worksheet that explains coping strategies. Then, they will play a game in groups of 2-4 that involves spinning a spinner and rolling a dice in order to practice a variety of coping strategies.
Why Teach Coping Strategies
Coping strategies are any activity that can help calm emotions and stress. Kids and young adults may often experience difficult emotions but do not have appropriate coping strategies for dealing with those feelings. Just some of the coping strategies discussed and practiced within this resource include: listening to music, taking a walk, coloring, deep breathing, hyperfocusing on an object, using positive self-talk, practicing yoga, counting to ten, talking to a friend, and much more.
How to Play
Each student will have their own Coping Strategies board. The first player will roll the dice and spin the spinner. This will allow them to add a chip or manipulative to that spot, but first they must practice the strategy! For example, if a student lands on "asking for a drink", they need to ask to get a drink. If they land on "Using positive self-talk", they must say a positive statement to themselves. Then, the next player will go. The first player to get six in a row wins! Best of all, kids can play again and again to practice different strategies.
Note that several gameboards are included: One with 18 coping strategies with visual supports, one with 36 coping strategies without visuals, and editable boards that you can create on your own in PowerPoint. This is especially helpful if you have students with individualized needs.
Reflecting About Coping Strategies
A student reflection form is included so that students can review their top five strategies. This is important so that kids can begin to think about which strategies worked best for them and why.
Note that both black/white and color options are included. Blank cards are also included to make your own social situations, as needed.
