What educators are saying

Great resource! No prep was required. I loved how easy it was to customize the suspects' names and put in teachers' names from my school. Great resource!
Thanks for the fun activity to practice percent problems! I used the names of teachers and rooms at our school. The students were very engaged in all my classes. Several of them were quick to tell me that they had proved that I was innocent!

Description

Looking for an activity solving proportions? In this fun activity you’ll solve proportions while solving a mystery! You’ll use the clues you gather from correctly solving proportion problems involving discounts, markups, sales tax and other percents to solve the mystery of Who Killed Mr. Prop.

This item is customizable using Adobe Acrobat Reader! Now you can change the title, suspects, weapons and locations! You can even change the "crime" in the title. Please note that the file may not function correctly in all PDF Readers. Please use Acrobat Reader to ensure best functionality.

The questions are posed in a variety of ways so that the student will find different portions of the proportion. Students will find all of the following:

• Original price

• Total cost

• Percent of discount or markup

• Sales tax rate

• Amount of sales tax

• Amount of discount or markup

This kit offers three ways to use this activity.

Use as a Scavenger Hunt: The download includes 23 full-color cards or 23 black-and-white cards for you to print and hang around your room for a class activity. As students solve the equations, they look around the room for their answer to see what clue they should eliminate.

Use as an Individual Activity: The download also includes a version that has all of the necessary clue information so students can complete this activity outside of the classroom.

Use as a a Digital Activity: The download includes a link to a digital activity in Google Slides.

In all of the versions, the activities contains 20 questions, and each answer is associated with either a suspect, a weapon or a location. When a student gets the answer, that option is eliminated from the mystery. When they are finished, students will only have one suspect, one weapon and location left, and they will have solved the mystery!
