Why Teach Executive Functioning Skills?

Executive functioning skills are some of the most important building blocks for success. These are the skills that help us plan, organize, start, and accomplish daily tasks. Both children and adults use these skills every single day! What's important is that everyone can build strategies and techniques when we learn about executive functioning skills.

Many students who forget assignments, are disorganized, can’t complete long-term assignments, have trouble focusing, and experience difficulty with change often have weak executive functioning skills. These are the students who need to be taught explicit skills in order to become successful in school and in life after school. Simply put, executive functioning skills are necessary life skills.

Regular educators, special educators, social workers, school psychologists, and other support staff may find this activity useful. It is also a good idea to keep a model flip book handy to review skills throughout the entire year. Note that you may want to print on colored paper for a flip book that really stands out.
