What educators are saying

Students would argue who got to go to the fluency station first - if that doesn't sell you on this task cards, nothing will!! Fluency has to be authentic for students and these fun and engaging cards really provide that opportunity. I love that it ties into our science standards as well!

Description

This set now available in a Big Science Bundle.

I have enjoyed getting fluency centers up and running in my classroom so much, that I have decided to try making some of my own fluency resources...although there are a lot of great fluency center resources out there. This packet includes a sheet on the research base for including fluency instruction and fluency (practice & reinforcement) stations in your classroom.

This is a set of fluency task cards based on wacky & wild informational facts about the weather. There are 2 sets of 18 cards for a total of 36 cards. Use these two sets anytime during the month of March or April and anytime you are studying about weather, earth science or identifying cause & effect on Earth. Each set of 18 has a quick 18 question comprehension assessment. The questions are not terribly hard but they do require TBE (text-based answers). Answer keys are provided for both comprehension checks which are called "Fluency Center Artifact Sheets" in this product. (I like to use the term "artifacts" with students instead of center assessments because artifacts are often all that is left behind when people [or dinosaurs] are gone, so they must leave as many clues in the artifact so I know they get it, because I will not be able to bring students home with me...the artifact is all I have to go on.)

Ideally, students would complete this as an independent center with a fluency partner, giving each other feedback on their fluent (or not-so-fluent) reading of the facts. There is an opportunity on the Artifact Sheet to record at least 3 repeated readings of each fact. This product is also ideal for any student reading below grade level or receiving a fluency intervention. These cards are also ideal for practicing Visualizing, Sketching and Note-taking with Informational Text.

Other Fluency Fact Card sets are:
Winter Olympics
Planet Earth
St. Patrick
Itty Bitty Insects
World Cup
