This file includes a viewing guide for students to complete as they watch Newsom's The Mask You Live In (2015). This file also includes an answer key.
According to Netflix, The Mask You Live In explores the question: "What does it mean to be a man? American society might be pushing a masculinity on our boys that destroys them." The documentary is 90 minutes and can be streamed using Netflix. As a result, many students can watch the documentary and complete the viewing guide independently or in class.
The viewing guide includes pre-viewing discussion questions (4), viewing questions (33), and post-viewing questions (4). The Word document is editable, so you can choose which questions are best for your students. The handout is designed to keep students engaged while they analyze the documentary's argument and consider their own position.
Once completed, I often have a graded discussion over the documentary where students use the viewing guide to inform and shape their opinions.
