What educators are saying

The questions had a lot of balance for each rigid motion and dilations. Asked rules questions along with coordinate points. My class LOVES these activities and I usually give them about 45 min to an hour to complete with collaboration.
My students loved the activity. It was engaging and my students really liked working together. The problems were aligned with the standards. It was a good change to take them away from paper and pencil practice to digital.

Description

An engaging math escape room for reviewing geometric transformations in the coordinate plane. Students must unlock 5 locks by translating, reflecting, rotating and dilating the vertex coordinates of geometric shapes. Questions are grouped 4 per puzzle, resulting in five 4-letter codes that will unlock all 5 locks.

Questions include:

  • translate up/down, left/right,
  • reflect over x-axis, y-axis, y = x, and x = 1,
  • rotate 90 degrees clockwise/counterclockwise about the origin,
  • rotate 180 degrees,
  • dilate from the origin.

Two versions of the digital escape room are included. One version has one negative dilation scale factor question, the other version does not include negative scale factor. The printable version of the escape room does not include negative scale factor.

The entire activity is housed in one GOOGLE Form. There are no links to outside websites. The 4-letter codes are set with answer validation so that students cannot move to the next puzzle until they enter the correct code. Includes answer key.

To add the digital escape room to your Google Drive: please open the PDF and click the button on page 3.

A printable PDF version has also been added to the file. Students can work in groups, each group starting at a different puzzle. Once done, students check the NEXT STEP box for which puzzle to visit next.

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
