Description

Personalized coordinate grid plotting activity with the students' names used as the "mystery" pictures. Kids love having their "15 minutes of fame!" Excellent coordinate grid practice any time of the year, but, if used at the beginning of the year, it's a fun way for students to learn the names of some of their classmates.

In this activity, each student draws a picture of his/her name on a coordinate grid and develops a set of coordinate pair directions so that someone else can replicate the drawing.

Pictures of letters are used in this unique graphing activity. This personalizes the assignment as the students draw their own names and the names of other students using line segments. A sample block letter alphabet is included for reference. The challenge lies in writing the corresponding coordinate pairs, in order, so that another student can make a copy of the name.

Components of this product:
1. Sample coordinate grid picture (the word "Graph") and corresponding coordinate pair instructions (for whole class review)
2. Student instructions for "Your Name In Coordinates" activity
3. Blank coordinate grid, 30 units x 40 units
4. Coordinate grid with 4 quadrants, x- and y-axes drawn and numbered
5. Sample block letter alphabet for student reference
6. Sample student name plotted and colored ("Davis")

This is a challenging, but fun activity that middle school students really enjoy. The finished products make great classroom decorations. Students love to see their names displayed!
