Description

This unit has been designed to teach students about Human Rights and Freedoms predominately within the context of the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Whilst this unit can be used across a variety of curriculum contexts, it has been designed to support the teaching of the Australian Curriculum: History; Rights and Freedoms, curriculum points ACDSEH023; ACDSEH104; ACDSEH105; ACDSEH106; ACDSEH134.

This resource has been designed to be used as stand-alone unit or alternatively it can undergo further expansion to fit your teaching program.

Please note:

-Internet access is required to complete the research activities in this unit.

-YouTube access is required to show videos (teacher only)

-The PowerPoint presentation contains images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died.

This unit is 100% editable-meaning that the powerpoint, activities and assessment task materials can all be adapted to suit the needs of your students! All teaching materials, worksheets and handouts have been made using powerpoint.

-The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 

-History of European arrival in Australia

-The struggle for rights and freedoms before 1965

-The Mabo case 

The presentation contains links to 6 relevant YouTube clips/documentaries with accompanying class discussion questions, along with images and embedded direction to complete activities. 

ACTIVITIES 

-Universal Declaration of Human Rights Socratic seminar: student seminar with detailed accompanying instructions for teachers

-Using appropriate terminology when discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people

-Significant events in the struggle for rights and freedoms jigsaw task 

-Stories of segregation task: students compare the segregation experience in the US, South Africa and Australia

-Closing the gap: students learn about the Closing the gap campaign and investigate ongoing inequality in Australia

-Mabo investigation task 

-Representations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the media task

ASSESSMENT TASKS

This unit includes one assessment task which is a scaffolded essay task with a prompt provided. The essay prompt encourages students to produce an in-depth examination of the rights and freedoms experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in modern day Australia.

  • Research & Source Analysis grid (source analysis how-to guide included)
  • Essay planning sheet
  • Essay draft & teacher feedback sheet
  • Final essay template sheet
  • Assessment rubric (includes fully editable rubric, student reflection sheet, teacher feedback section)

A four page teaching guide with suggested time frames and tips for using the resource in your classroom. 

LENGTH OF UNIT

This unit is designed to take between 20-29 lessons (approx. 4-6 weeks of class time).

 A ‘lesson’ is assumed to be approximately 50 minutes long.
