Description
This resource is a Google Doc linked to an interactive gallery on the Boxer Rebellion.
By 1900, resentment caused by foreign intervention had reached a boiling point in China. A secret Chinese martial arts society called the Righteous and Harmonious Fists— known as the Boxers— transformed into a semi-official militia. They targeted foreigners for exploiting Chinese society and violating its customs. Boxers attacked foreign missionaries, as well as Chinese Christians seen as collaborating with Western forces. Churches were burned, foreign homes were attacked, and Western officials were targeted. The uprising was crushed a few months later by an international force.
Students will analyze the gallery then complete the 2 short answer questions on the doc. This activity has worked very well in pairs. This is an excellent enrichment activity.
Students will learn about:
- The Boxers
- Western Targets
- Anti-Christian Sentiment
- Boxers Become Official Militia
- Foreign Powers Respond
