What educators are saying
Description
Need a fun way to encourage your students to write? Each of the 36 topics includes a short video clip. Post or project for students and let them react, respond, and then discuss their journal entries with classmates.
For example: Did you know that squirrels lose more than half of all the nuts that they bury?
Written Response: If squirrels lose more than half the nuts they bury, my mom must be a squirrel! She loses her phone, her car keys, and her sunglasses several times a day. I hope I’m not squirrelly when I grow up!
Discuss: My mom is squirrelly, too! So is mine! I think Ms. Billings is a little squirrelly, too!
Use a new topic each Friday of the school year. For the first few weeks, demonstrate how to turn the prompt into a statement and then elaborate. This helps beginners become more confident in their writing skills. Soon, students will need no guidance. They’ll be excited to see the next topic, think about what it means to them, and then record their feelings in either their digital or paper journal. My students love their writing journals!
