Description

You’ll have loads of fun with this thematic “birds” bundle of lessons and activities. We address BEST PRACTICES for our youngest gifted and advanced learners with hand-on puzzles, storytelling, participatory reading, acting, humor, video, and improvisation. In the process, we will deliver two social emotional messages—one about teamwork, and one about diversity.

So little time, and so much to do! That’s why we always, always, always engage and challenge students in critical thinking across the curriculum. Our main curricular components in this bundle are literacy (poetry) and speaking and listening.

Total time: about 3+ hours, easily broken up into little kid-sized chunks; I teach them 30 minutes at a time

Level: KG and 1st grade

Materials: included here or easily accessible online; Recommended to checkout from the library, Good-Night, Owl by Pat Hutchins

Launch with Shadows and Shadow Puppets: Students think about teamwork as they watch a very cool short video (always a good target for our Generation Z Learners) and then have a chance to try out their own shadow puppets.

Bird Puzzle: Each student receives a bird puzzle piece, must locate other students with different pieces, and then will put together the bird puzzle using teamwork—our first social-emotional lesson.

Bird Puzzle Stories: Our bird puzzles come to life with improvisations and storytelling. Students are given prompt cards with objects (or abstract ideas for a super advanced challenge) that they must weave into their stories.

Social-Emotional Kindness and Diversity: Students discuss kindness and accepting differences in others (How would it feel if . . .?) after watching two short videos. We return to the idea of teamwork with the second video.

Sponge Extra Creativity: Make sure you can use all of your time to your students’ advantage with this additional creative activity involving the pieces of the bird puzzle.

Boy Flying Poetry: We use a wonderful poem to address critical thinking and literacy standards and then respond to the poem with inferences via artwork. Some responses will amaze you!

Good Night, Owl: Fun improvisations and creativity with onomatopoeia.
