In this highly engaging Ku Klux Klan investigation, students examine the nature of the American terrorist group known as the Ku Klux Klan that was born in the Reconstruction period in American History. Students investigate and analyze the actions of the Ku Klux Klan through 6 different primary source artifacts, including images, testimony, and letters to answer the following questions regarding the KKK:
- Who were the Ku Klux Klan?
- What were their goals?
- How did they accomplish their goals?

Students compile source information regarding each one they investigate and take essential notes based on how it helps answer each essential question. To conclude, students compile an engaging report to the Department of Homeland Security regarding the history, nature, and methods of the Ku Klux Klan.
This activity includes modifications for differentiated instruction as well - one with the source and note-taking packet and the other with the culminating student writing assignment.
This resource includes a paper in-class version and a 1:1 Google compatible version to be used in conjunction with Google Classroom. Just follow the included instructions for how to access the Google version, then share the resource through Google or assign via Google Classroom. This will allow students to type directly into the document!
