Description

Langston Hughes was an amazing poet who infused his love of jazz and blues into his writing. He wrote of injustice, poverty, and racism and helped inspire a generation to dream. He was one of the first African Americans to earn a living as an author.

Included are resources for your students to research and learn about Langston Hughes and his legacy. You will receive:

* a list of poems by Langston Hughes
* 16 quote cards that can be cut out and displayed around the room or switched out every week
* a Langston Hughes biography
* a Langston Hughes biography timeline
* a graphic organizer for organizing researched facts about Langston Hughes
* Higher-level questions about Langston Hughes and his poetry
* an organizer to analyze “Harlem (Dream Deferred)” by Langston Hughes
* an organizer to analyze “Dream Boogie” by Langston Hughes
* a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two poems
* stationary for students to write their own beat poetry.

I have used this resource with my fourth grade students as a whole class activity in order to model how to analyze poetry. It can easily be used with older students who might need less support. Either way, your students will love learning about this rhythmic poet who was highly influenced by his life as an African-American in the early to mid-1900s.
