Designed to be used in isolation or with the free narration video here: https://youtu.be/rbF1VFis2f4 (link included in file as well), this is a 3-page guide that features a discussion of civil disobedience as it relates to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's actions leading to his arrest in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 and his famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Giving a brief background of the civil rights issues in Birmingham, Bull Connor's attempts to quash demonstrations and protests, and Dr. King's defiance of these attempts, this guide presents the arguments against civil disobedience published by eight clergymen and Dr. King's impassioned response in defense of civil disobedience. Dr. King's letter DOES NOT APPEAR HERE IN ITS ENTIRETY NOR IN ALL OF ITS ORIGINAL WORDS. It is merely an adapted excerpt containing Dr. King's arguments supporting civil disobedience, using simplified language and syntax while remaining as faithful as possible to the original work. This activity is meant for learners who do not yet have the the literacy skills to analyze the original work.
