Do you love to read about unsolved mysteries? Capture your students' attention with nonfiction paragraphs about aliens, UFO's, crop circles, and much more! This is my students' favorite lesson. It is a great way to teach the main idea without boring the kids to death.
I have two YouTube videos that preview and explain this lesson. Please check them out and like them!

This lesson is a main idea lesson with two parts: guided mini lessons and also an independent literacy center for practice. You can also use the literacy center for your reading intervention groups. I used it both as a center and as re-teaching main idea to my struggling readers.
There are 12 different cards. Each card has a color picture. You can pick which answer sheet format fits your needs.
There are 5 mini-lessons with paragraphs about endangered animals. Then, there are 12 main idea cards with color pictures: The Lost City of Atlantis, The Loch Ness Monster, The Bermuda Triangle, The Taos Hum, The Roanoke Colony, Hopkinsville Goblins, Crop Circles, Ghosts, Shadow People, Stonehenge, The Baltic Sea Anomaly, and Are Aliens Stealing Our Water?
The topics were selected to be high-interest topics for boys and girls in grades 3 through seven. The topic and picture will grab their interest; and learning will follow. When I created these I created them because the resources I had were boring my students to death. My motivation was to create a resource that would both entertain and teach them. I noticed most of my kids are into the Unsolved Mysteries section of our library. That gave me the idea!
By the intermediate grades, many struggling students have been in intervention groups and have had the same lessons over and over. Hopefully this is something that is new and different and will stick with those struggling students!
