Master Schedule Best Practices
SET YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES FIRST
The schedule needs to have these key components:
1. Intervention Time (time for EC, Intervention and Enrichment) - those needs to be scattered throughout the day to ensure each division of the school (K-2, 3-5, 6-9) has specific time with the EC Teachers and Interventionist. Planning my SPED classes to build the most opportunity for inclusion or collaboration
2. Academic Education Plan: Are there specifics around how long certain academic programs daily lesson plans - ask the teachers how long it takes for math? Science labs - etc.
3. Common PLC Time: In K-5 this is fairly easy - in the MYP this will be a little more challenging based on the small staff but you'll want to build time so that the IB Coordinator can work with them and they can plan together.
4. Common Spaces Used?: If there are common places the kids need to use for lunch and recess that can be shared or held sacred.
5. Electives: Will they be year long or semester? Will all students have the same electives?
6. High School: Looking at singleton classes offered first (i.e. Latin, English II, roboix) and then looking at AP and Honors classes.
7. Teacher Development: Is there a way to build teacher and employee development opportunities into the school day.
8. Daily and Weekly Student life and learning. What do we want students to experience daily?
9. Parent engagement: Is there a way to build parent or volunteer engagement into the school day to involve them in a positive way while providing the teachers an opportunity to collaborate together or have additional planning time.
10. Transition Time for Students and Elective Teachers: Be sure to build white space for elective teachers to transition and to prepare for their next class.
