Description

This spider craft is interdisciplinary and incorporates math, art, science, and ELA! My spider art activity is influenced by the artist Piet Mondrian. I have done this spider math project with kindergarten through second grade. It could also be done as multiplication for older students. A facts book is also included.

Directions:

Step 1: Have students practice drawing spiders. ( I use the spiders facts book, and have them practice drawing a spiders on each page. Or, they can practice in a writing journal, and jot down a spiders fact to go with their drawing.

Step 2: I introduce the artist Piet Mondrian and primary colors, using the document projector and page 2.

Step 3: Pass out the web templates. (I cut them in half and only pass out the top to begin with.) I like to pass out three different spiders web templates randomly, so the pieces become more varied. I have students use red, yellow, and blue to color in the web. Remind them to also leave some sections white.

Step 4: Pass out the bottom “spiders math word problem”. Depending on the grade or ability level, I tell them the range of spiders they can choose to draw. (In first grade, I usually ask them to choose between 2 and 4 spiders.)

Step 5: They draw their spiders below the math word problem, and trace them with marker. They count the legs, and fill in the numbers above.

Step 6: I have them glue each half sheet, web above the problem, on a sheet of black construction paper.
