The lesson plan is designed into 6 sections
1. Section One - What would film be without music?
Students are given several examples of two videos side by side in the PowerPoint Slideshow. Both videos are of the same exact movie scene, one with music, and one without music. Students reflect on their activity sheets of the emotions they experienced watching the film with music. Students are shown the same movie scene again without music and reflect on how much of the emotions are now gone.
2. Section Two - How Music Deceives Us
Students are taken through 3 examples where they are shown 4 videos each side by side in the PowerPoint Slideshow. Students watch the same movie clip in total 4 times, each time with different music. Students will be prompted on their worksheets, and through partner talks which music they would choose if they were directing the movie, and why they would choose that music. Students will also discuss how using different types of music styles, genres, moods, tempos, & dynamics can change how we view characters and events.
3. Section Three - Theme Music in Movies
Students are taken through 6 examples of how music can best represent characters. As theme music plays, students vote on three different characters that the music best represents. Students reflect on their activity sheets why that music best represents the characters they chose.
4. Section Four - How Music Reacts in Film
Students are shown a short film of how music reacts to events and characters. Students analyze scenes by identifying instruments, dynamics, and tempos that are used when different characters appear and events take place.
5. Section Five - The Art of Sound Effects & Instrumentation.
Students are shown 10 small clips of animals, objects, vehicles, dinosaurs & more. Students discuss and document what objects can be used to re-create sound effects in the clips. In the second half of examples, students discuss and document what instruments best represent sounds in clips.
6. Section Six - Script Writing Inspired by Music
Six different pieces of cinematic music are presented to your students. Students pick one of the examples and write a script for a short film based off the music they hear. Students can share scripts with partners to the cinematic music, and students can perform their scripts to the cinematic music for the class. Students can also perform their scripts to cinematic music examples that their scripts were not intended for to see how the music changes the purpose of their original intentions.
