    Description

This is a bundle of my two very popular no-prep law lessons. They are two very simple but effective lesson plans that I'm very proud of. I've had great feedback (both online and from my students) and I think they're two pretty unique takes on teaching law concepts.

Both look at morality and ethics and investigate two interesting ideas.

    1. Driverless cars and the trolley problem

This takes the classic moral conundrum and applies to the very real-life problems facing the companies manufacturing self-driving vehicles.

The trolley problem is a thought experiment which provides an ethical dilemma. In the hypothetical scenario there is a trolley car going down the tracks. On the tracks there are 5 people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is heading straight for them. Luckily, you are stood next to a lever which diverts the trolley down a different track and away from the 5 people on the tracks. Unfortunately, on the diverted line there is 1 person tied up and on the tracks. The question is: do you pull the lever or not?

This lesson applies this classic thought experiment to the development of driverless cars.

A new driverless car is taking its single passenger down the road at 70mph. Two pedestrians suddenly come out into the middle of the road. The car can either go off the road and into a tree, killing the passenger inside. Or, it can carry on and crash into the two pedestrians, killing them instantly.

You are the lawyers for Tesla, a company designing driverless cars. Elon Musk, the CEO, has come to you and asked you for your legal and moral advice. How should he programme the new cars? To save the passenger or the pedestrians?

    2. Debate and Mock Trial

This PPT & Lesson Plan looks at the real-life trial of Derek Bentley - the last person to receive a death sentence in the UK.

In the 1950's, two teenagers, Derek Bently and Christopher Craig were in the process of robbing a house when the police arrived and an officer apprehended Bentley. Craig brought out a gun he was carrying. The police officer, Fred Fairfax, said "Don't do anything silly, lad. Just give me the gun", and Bentley shouted the ambiguous phrase "Let him have it". Craig shot Fairfax in the shoulder and killed another office with a bullet to the head.

The big question is: did "let him have it" mean "shoot him" or did it mean "pass him the weapon"? The students debate this and then role-play a mock trial to come to the right and moral decision. It's a great gateway into topics such as crime and punishment, morals and ethics, the death penalty, mental health, and lots more! It's my #1 most popular lesson!
