What educators are saying

We use this resource daily! My students are practicing note taking and this was a great way to teach it! Thank you for this resource.
This was a good activity to add with my note-taking unit at the beginning of the semester. Will continue to use it in the future.

Description

Do your students struggle with taking notes in class, especially from a lecture? Are they unsure what to write down, or how to organize their ideas?

Use this lesson to empower students with a critical skill that can change their academic lives! And the best part? You can use this lesson set concurrently with another unit, so you’re able to efficiently make progress with this skill alongside your existing curriculum!

NEW: This resource now includes Google Docs and Slides versions for ease of use with distance or hybrid learning!

(True Story: I co-taught this lesson for a recent administrator observation, and the college professor who watched us asked, “You ARE going to post this on TpT, RIGHT? Other students NEED this!”)

Here’s how it works:

1. Day 1: Teach the provided PowerPoint lesson, with guided notes (and answer key). The lesson addresses why we take notes, what to write down, how to organize them, and how to study with them after the class ends.

2. Days 2-5+: Combine my note-taking practice sheets with YOUR CHOICE LESSONS in your unit to help students get in-class practice of note-taking skills! Students get to experiment with up to 4 different note-taking styles, using the provided sheets. (NOTE: There is also an example set of the 4 note-taking styles if you want to critique them with students.)

3. Grading: At the end, students get to self-assess how they think their note-taking went, and there are easy check-boxes for you to give students praise or constructive feedback on the quality of their notes.

4. Follow-up: After my materials end, you can follow with any other choice discussions of what “good notes” look like, or just move on to your unit assessments, like a test or project.

5. BONUS: This download includes a VIDEO of me teaching the PowerPoint! Watch it to get ideas of points you could discuss, or play it directly for your students!

6. BONUS: This resource includes BOTH the MS Office, Google Doc/Slides, and PDF versions.

That’s it! You will see a visible difference in your students’ note taking by the end, and they will be more self-aware about what they’re writing down, when, and why.

This 14-page, 23-slide, 1-video download includes PDF and editable copies of all you need: Lesson, guided notes, answer key, practice activity, and teacher’s guide, including a sample schedule.
