Creative Writing Poetry Unit: 18 Detailed Lessons & 85 Activities

This creative writing high school poetry unit has 18 detailed lessons and 85 fun activities. Students are led through 85 journal activities to complete a poetry portfolio of 7 poems. It is a no prep, print and go resource. The 89 vibrant PowerPoint slides (please see the video preview) lead the students through all of the lessons. The detailed lesson plans have been designed so that each plan can be directly shared with students on a screen. A sub with prep time could supervise these lessons, as all instructions are supplied. Textual analysis tasks are expected of students, but primarily the unit is directed to the writing of poetry of different genres. They are also exposed to some fabulous poems by poets from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. The detailed lesson plans have been designed so that each plan can be directly shared with students on a screen. Included with the resource is a 34 page journal. During the unit, students complete short journal entries every class. They could receive completion marks for these entries. The journal is compressed as much as possible to avoid wastage of paper. The lessons are designed to last an hour for an average class. If you have a class that takes their time over activities (either for good or bad reasons!), you might wish to exclude some of the shorter activities.

    Creative Writing Board Game
Creative writing students travel around a perilous board, performing writing and speaking tasks, and answering literary terms questions, striving to get to the Amazon Bestselling Author Banquet with the most royalty payments.

Who is this game intended for?

Students aged 14-18 in English Language Arts classes, especially if they are taking a creative writing unit, will enjoy this game. Students in a designated Creative Writing course will also lap it up.

Purposes of the Never Bored Board Game

    ~ to provide writing practice.

~ to provide some incentive to learn literary terms; students will have to answer questions based on a list of 50 terms to be successful. The game could be used as either preparation for a test, or as a reward after one.

~ to reflect orally on the creative process.

~ to have fun- lots of it!

    Game concept

Students are famous writers. The player who arrives at the Amazon Bestseller List Banquet with the most royalty payments wins. Players travel around the board from home to the banquet, picking up activity cards as they land on Literary Terms, Share and Dare squares. Players win royalties by answering literary terms questions, by verbally sharing their ideas on a creative topic for 30-45 seconds, and by performing Dare writing activities.

Dare questions involve creativity and daring: mini writing activities, such as writing haikus and limericks, have to be completed before the play returns back to the writer. The mini-writing piece is then read out to the group.

Travelling around the board, perils threaten – like forgetting their laptop or being accused of plagiarism. Students can never be quite sure when royalties will be lost or gained, or whether a path will provide them with a shortcut to the banquet or send them hurtling back again.

    Poetry genres handouts and activities

This lively printable identifies all the major genres of poetry, and gives definitions and examples. It asks students to answer 9 short questions on the different poetry types, and to write a free verse poem of their own. The answer key is so clear that it can be distributed to students to mark their own answer, then retained in their binders for review. A literary terms anagrams freebie game is included.

Poetic types covered in this resource:

    Free verse

    Blank verse

    Lyrical poetry

    Narrative poetry

    Petrarchan sonnets

    Shakespearean sonnets

    Ballads

    Elegies

    Epics

Fabulous poems by writers from the United States, Canada, Australia, England and Scotland illustrate each of the poetry types. Students have to answer a 2 mark question on each poem. Only a few lines are provided for each response- they have to be succinct! The worksheets conclude with students having to write a 6 line free verse poem, using a Rupi Kaur poem as their model.

    Literary Terms Bingo
A literary terms game will elevate literary devices review from a chore to entertainment! Use one of the world’s most popular games to motivate students to learn literary terms. Only if they know the answers to your bingo caller questions do they have a chance at victory.
