What educators are saying

My 6th graders LOVED this and were VERY engaged. I loved that I was able to leave out certain parts of the project to differentiate.
We used this project as an end of year project in 6th grade after completing our percent unit. It was fun and engaging for students.

Description

This project is designed to be a cumulative activity for students to complete after a percent unit. Skills in this unit include simple interest, calculating sales tax, discounts, and gratuities, percent error, percent of change, and percent application questions. This project can be given over the course of a couple of days or you can split each task up into a separate day. In this project, students will complete different tasks that relate to designing their own taco truck. The project is split into seven different sections that are outlined below:

Part One: Design Your Own Taco Truck & Menu – The first part of this activity is used to create student buy in. Students will design a basic menu and illustrate their taco truck. Students are given specific guidelines with a checklist to follow.
Part Two: Selecting a Food Truck & Simple Interest – Students will be given three different choices of food trucks to purchase. Once they have selected their choice, they will calculate three different simple interest options for their food truck and select the best financing option from the choices.
Part Three: Take Orders Students will need to ask six different people to order from their food truck. They will then calculate the total cost of each order.
Part Four: Sales Tax & Discounts– Students will use the order totals calculated in part three to answer six different sales tax and discount questions.
Part Five: Percent Error – Students will calculate percent error questions based on their number of sales.
Part Six: Percent Increase or Decrease – Students will be forced to change their original menu pricing. They will then calculate the percent increase or decrease of their changes.
Part Seven: Special Event Pricing – Students will answer a variety of percent application questions related to markups, markdowns, percent proportion, etc.

In order to make this project more appealing to students, the majority of the questions are designed to specifically relate to each student's taco truck and menu pricing. As a result, no two students’ work will be the same. It is for this reason that there is no answer key to this particular product.
