How to use these Science of Reading Placement Assessments:

When you give the placement assessment, students will point and read in the student page and you will follow along on the tracking page. A separate sheet is including for writing.

Each assessment beyond Unit 1 covers two units. If a student misses three words or sentences in a row, you will stop the assessment. You will start students at the unit.

How will I know if a student has mastered a unit?

Generally, if a students scores 80% or above, you will move them to the next unit. However, there may be times you will want to start in the unit you just assessed.

For example, if a student scored an 80% on the Units 2-3 assessment but struggled to decode words with short u, you would want to begin them in Unit 3 at the short u lessons.

If a students completely masters decoding but scores low on encoding, you may want to do a shortened version of the unit with a heightened focus on writing.

While the Science of Reading Curriculum has end of unit assessments included, you may choose to use this placement assessment as an alternative for a shortened assessment.

Modifications: If you find that the assessment page is overwhelming for a student, cover it with a piece of colored paper. Uncover one line at a time.

Can I use this Science of Reading Placement Assessment if I am not using your Science of Reading Curriculum?

Yes, you can. However, you will want to make sure that the scope and sequence aligns with the scope and sequence of the curriculum you are using.

Why are multiple units assessed on one page?

To save you time and copies! If as student shows mastery of one unit, they can immediately move into the next unit's assessment. You can easily chop the pages in half if desired.

Where should I begin with this assessment?

In Kindergarten, I suggest beginning with the Unit 1 assessment. In 1st grade and above, I suggest beginning with the Units2-3 assessment unless you have reason to believe a student is beyond that.

What if a student shows mastery of every skill within this placement assessment?

Then they most likely do not need to be in a skill group within the Science of Reading Curriculum! Instead, I would begin a group to work on fluency and comprehension.
