What educators are saying

I assigned this project digitally as an early-finisher project for Daily 5 groups. My students are highly engaged and love this project. I like how easy it is to modify for my 3rd graders.
This has been a great resources for our travel planning cluster. Students have learned a lot using this resource.

Description

Taking a vacation is no easy task. It might seems like it for kids and students that follow along, but it's not the case for adults. So why don't we put that planning and organization into the hands of our students. Let them see what it's like to price out the costs of driving/flying, staying in hotels, and eating out every day. Vacations are fantastic but they take work. This year ask your students to take a larger role and plan a vacation.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

Plan A Vacation asks students to plan a vacation starting with the the destination and travel to the food and lodging. This project integrates elements of math and ELA by combining cross curricular activities/skills (planning, design, budgeting and organization). By the end of this PBL students will have completely planned out a unique vacation that will included finding prices for food, travel, lodging, and any activities.

Students will need to have access to a variety of resources to complete this PBL. This could include maps, internet access, laptops/computers/devices, geographical books, and more. Students will need to be able to find current information regarding travel prices (gas, lodging, activities, amusement parks, etc).

There are 18 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research. As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

What's Included

PAGE Title Contents

6 Title Page

7 Brainstorm

Students brainstorm what they know about vacations.

8 vocabulary

Students write or draw three pages of vocabulary terms.

11 Where To

Students pick five places they would like to go on vacation and write why.

12 Final Destination

Students make a final decision and add more information about the location including climate, geography, and other key details.

13 Pack Your Stuff

Students must pack their suitcase and backpack for their trip.

14 Just The Facts

Students research the location they’re visiting and write eight facts about where they will be. If students are stopping along the way, they can include facts they learned along the way.

16 Vacation Specifics

This page tells and shows how long students will be spending on vacation by breaking down travel, days, and nights. It leads to the next four pages that are all on travel, board, gas, and food costs.

17 Travel Cost

Students find the cost of flying versus driving (gas money). They will need access to the internet to find costs, along with current gas prices.

18 Lodging Cost

Students must find a hotel and costs associated. They may need to use the internet to find this, along with finding hotels in the area they are staying.

19 Activity Cost

Students must find the cost of daily activities. These could be the same cost each day or change depending on what they are doing.

20 Food Cost

Students will find the cost of food during their vacation for each day and total days combined. They will need to be able to access the internet to find locations that are close to where they are staying.

21 Vacation Cost

Students will need to find the total cost of their vacation.

22 Vacationsta

Students will capture (using illustrations they make) their vacation on the social media app.

23 Dear Diary

Students will keep a daily journal/diary of what they did and where they went on vacation. This is for Tuesday through Friday.

27 My Vacation

Students write a single page narrative on their vacation. They will decide exactly what they’ll write about.

29 MAP IT OUT

Students will create a map (to it’s true form) of where they vacationed. They will want to include lodging and food locations to make this look as close to real-life as possible. This map should be a true representation so students may need access to the internet to look at maps of where they are staying.

30 Problem Solver

Students must figure out how they would solve issues they might face during their trip.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions. Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
