Fellow teachers are always asking me, "How do you get your students to write so descriptively?" and I always tell them, "Poetry!" It is so easy, if you give them the tools to make their writing come alive. Using figurative language in any piece of writing adds details and descriptions that will set their writing apart from others.

******************************************************************************************

This poetry unit is unlike most poetry units sold on TpT. This unit focuses on students using figurative language in their own writing NOT on students writing poems, which isn't in the CCSS. My main goal in creating this poetry unit is to expose students to poetry and in doing so, give them the tools they need to improve their own writing. Students will read poems, respond to poetry, learn about the structure of poems, and also learn key poetry terminology.

This was a lifesaver. I HATE teaching poetry. It is not natural for me, which is why I loved this resource. Not only did it have everything I needed to teach the unit, but my students also looked forward to poetry every day. It not only has the lessons, but it also gives multiple practices on each figurative language piece. This would be great if you had a long-term sub situation because it has everything they would need for an entire unit. I also liked the original poems that were included. My students wanted to keep reading the poems even after our time was up. This is exactly what a full poetry unit should have, anything and everything that you would need. Thank you so much Jan, you may have changed my attitude about teaching poetry.
