Polygon Game : Classifying 2-D Figures : 5th Grade Center : Math Review Station

2-D Figures Geometry Game: Classifying 2-D Figures into categories: Are you working with your students on the following standard: 5.G.B.3 "Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties." If so, using this game to help review 2-D figures is a great way to reinforce the standard. Please note that the game directions tell the students to name/categorize the figure in TWO ways other than using the terms "plane figure" or "2D Figure".

How does the game work? Students will roll, solve, and then go. On a student's turn, they will roll the dice one time. They will then move that many spaces. They will look at the 2D figure and then name it in two ways. They must name it in two ways other than using the terms "2 D figure" or "Plan figure".

The answer terms/vocabulary that are used for the game are:

■ polygon

■ quadrilateral

■ parallelogram

■ Rectangle

■ Rhombus

■ Square

■ Kite

■ Hexagon

■ Pentagon

■ Octagon

■ Equilateral triangle

■ Isosceles Triangle

■ Scalene triangle

■ Right Triangle

■ Obtuse angle

■ Acute Triangle

■ regular polygon

■ Trapezoid

For example, they may land on a space that has a picture of a trapezoid. Students would give two words to name it. They might say polygon or quadrilateral or trapezoid (giving 2 ways). If they land on a square, they could give any of these words: polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, and square.

**If you wanted to give your kids a challenge, you could change the directions and have them name all ways to name the 2D figure.

Their partner will check the answer using the key. If they get it right, they get to stay where they are. If they miss it, they move back 1 space. The first one to the end wins the game.

NOTE: This is a black/white game with black line graphics. There is NOT a color copy included. When I created this for my own class, I decided to make something that took few copies, something that would save my ink, something that had easy directions, and was very little prep work. :-)

This naming 2-D figures game will work perfectly as a math center during math rotations.

Please look closely at the thumbnails and preview to make sure the fractions I chose will work for you.

For this game, you will need a dice, game markers, the game board, and the answer key.

Your students are sure to have fun as they play.
