Why Teach Positive Self-Talk Skills

Positive self-talk is the internal dialogue we use to provide encouragement and support. These phrases can be said out loud or in our heads privately. They include statements like, “Today is going to be a great day,” and “I am a work in progress.”

There are several reasons to use positive self-talk on a regular basis. For one, these statements can be a healthy start to every morning to provide encouragement and build confidence. They can also be used as a coping strategy to manage stress and tough emotions. For example, when feeling stressed or overwhelmed, the statements can be read to give feelings of calm and self-love. When negative thoughts come into play, positive self-talk can be a healthy way to reframe those thoughts. For example, if someone starts to think how poorly they will do on a test, they can instead think, “I’m going to study and do my very best,” to help provide reassurance and encouragement.

How to Use

This journal is designed to include different activities for every day of the week. That means your learners can complete on page each day for a total of 15 weeks. Practicing positive self-talk every day is the best option because it encourages students to make this part of their routine. Students may also use this journal as a “do now” or when they finish work early.

The five sections included in each week are:

1. Positive self-talk: Students create their own positive self-talk statements, read them, and consider what they mean.

2. Reframing thoughts: Students take negative self-talk and turn it into positive self-talk.

3. Positive affirmations: Students read and re-write positive affirmations.

4. Self-talk situations: Given a real-life situation, students come up with examples for positive self-talk statements that may be used.

5. Beyond the words: Students are given a self-talk statement and questions, encouraging them to “dig deeper” beyond the positive statement.

Sample answers are also included to provide some extra support when needed.

Note that both color and black/white options are included.
