What educators are saying

Great activity. Students really liked learning about all the progressive moments and the people that shaped them.
This was great! My students did take a longer time to complete this (~60 mins) but I teach primarily ELLs.

Description

This activity on Progressive Era Muckrakers features a 1-page reading about Muckrakers plus a chart of 7 famous American muckrakers, their works, subjects, and the effects they had on America. After reading the chart, students complete a set of analysis questions to help demonstrate their understanding of muckrakers and their effects.

The chart features information on each of the following muckrakers:

  • Thomas Nast
  • Jacob Riis
  • Ida B. Wells
  • Frank Norris
  • Ida Tarbell
  • Lincoln Steffens
  • Upton Sinclair

The completed version of the chart presents all the relevant information about each of them clearly so students can easily understand the accomplishments and works of each one.

A blank version of the chart is provided as well if you prefer to have your students use the 1-page reading to complete it, or research the muckrakers further to complete it themselves.

An answer key for the 10-question worksheet is also included for your convenience.

Also included are Google Docs versions of the activities! If you're in a paperless classroom or just want to integrate more digital resources, you can use the provided links to bring this resource into Google Classroom!

The Google Doc version includes links to online resources for students to research each muckraker or you can use the editable online chart.

This resource can also be downloaded as part of the Progressives and Imperialism Unit Plan Bundle!
