Description
⭐ NO PREP DIGITAL WRITING LESSONS: With 10 passages and prompts, students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades learn how to read a text closely and respond with an effective explanatory paragraph using the RACES writing strategy. Students can also use this format to write the body paragraphs of an essay!
**DESIGNED FOR GRADES 6-8** This resource is not recommended for grades below 6th.
►Except for the acronym, this resource is the same as TIQAC Writing Strategy Practice and Reading Passages. I do not recommend buying them both.
Restate all the necessary parts of the prompt
Answer all parts of the prompt
Cite evidence from the text
Explain the evidence in your own words
Sum up the paragraph
- The Explanatory Writing and RACES Introduction slideshow will help students gain an overview of explanatory writing and the RACES strategy.
- The Explanatory Writing Reference Packet will give students more detailed information by breaking down each step and showing examples.
- The RACES Explanatory Paragraph Rubric will help guide students as they write their paragraphs and can be used for self-evaluation.
- Ten Practice Sets with a passage, prompt, graphic organizer, and a response page will guide students through each step of the process. (Text boxes that provide hints and reminders have also been added to further support students as they utilize the writing process.) Students can highlight text and type directly on the slides!
- In addition, there is a completed Example Set for each practice set that can be used for teacher modeling or for students to analyze and critique.
►If you teach in a Microsoft district, these lessons download perfectly to PowerPoint! You will still need a Google account in order to access the resource.
►These lessons are ideal for whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction for the grade levels I have tagged. It also works well for Response to Intervention (RTI), private tutoring, summer school, and remote learning.
►For students working below grade level, I recommend using the teacher-led/ direct instruction method outlined in the teacher guide. The resource is designed with gradual release, BUT some students may need a high level of teacher support throughout the lessons.
►A note about using these lessons for independent work... These lessons could be assigned for homework or learning stations if your students have been introduced to the concepts and skills prior to assigning them. I would also consider whether or not your students are good at reading and following directions.
