What educators are saying

This resource has been the perfect way to jazz up my reading fluency lessons. My students love reading the different parts with different voices. The girls and boys compete to see who does a better job with accuracy and character voices. Thank you!!
So fun! My students loved reader's theater and the rhythm and rhyme was a great way to work on fluency!

Description

Poetry ~ Readers' Theater Poems: THE SILLY POEMS COLLECTION: A 10-poem collection of super-fast and funny readers’ theater scripts that are . . . well . . . silly poems.

The 10 readers' theater poems in THE SILLY POEMS COLLECTION are:

* Baddest, Toughest, Meanest (available as part of my free readers' theater 3-poem compilation preview)

* Bookworm

* Chicken Chunk Surprise

* Do Not Disturb

* I Gave Myself a Haircut (available as part of my free readers' theater 3-poem compilation preview)

* My Thesaurus

* New Kid

* Shopping with My Mother

* Throwing Snowballs

* When Dad Was a Kid (available as part of my free readers' theater 3-poem compilation preview)

Each poem is presented as a very short stand-alone readers' theater script that's only about 1-page long. If you use the 10 poems individually for short, quick performances, they will cover a class of 22 students (8 of the poems are 2-reader poems, and 2 of them are for 3 readers). However, multiple students can also be assigned to choral read the same role in order to accommodate larger class sizes. Also, Appendix A: Silly-poem Compilations provides three additional readers' theater scripts—each comprised of 3–4 of the poems from the collection woven into a single script, making it so a group of students has a longer script to practice and perform. One of the 3-poem readers' theater compilations—"I Gave Myself a Haircut (& Other Silly Poems)"—is available as a FREE download so you can preview my work.

The scripts include lists of “Watch-out words!” This feature highlights challenging words for which students may need help as they practice. These words also make terrific candidates for classroom vocabulary instruction.

If you choose to do script-based vocabulary instruction, Appendix B: Word Work provides vocabulary pages for the three readers' theater silly-poem compilations. Each vocabulary page uses four of the “Watch-out words!” from the corresponding silly-poem compilation. A Word Work: Sample Answer Key provides a basic, kid-friendly explanation of each word’s meaning, which can be used when actively teaching students the words.

For a classroom reading block, readers’ theater can be used as a student-monitored station during small-group instructional time, and Appendix C: Weekly Practice Checklist provides a framework for students’ day-by-day practice.

Additional materials include a basic overview of readers' theater, numerous tips and tricks for successful implementation, and a listing of some of the applicable Common Core Standards for grades 3-5.

THE SILLY POEMS COLLECTION is ready to provide a fast, funny, and favorite source of readers' theater fluency practice for your students!

Additional readers' theater poetry collections also include:

* ANOTHER SILLY POEMS COLLECTION

* THE T-REX FROM MY CEREAL: A SILLY POEMS COLLECTION
