Description

Readers Theatre Script, the story of, and the poem, written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD, who was a Canadian medical officer stationed close to Ypres, France during World War I.
Many are familiar with the poem, but not with the background to the writing of this poem. I scripted this for upper elementary grades after listening to yet another, poorly delivered rendition of this poem. I wanted my students to understand the background which would then inform their interpretation and delivery of the poem. I scripted it for several voices, hearing multiple voices in my mind, as those of the fallen - speaking their story.

I have used this with teachers at workshops, and have been moved by their response to the potential for a meaningful interpretation.

I hope that you will use this with your students, and that you will use multiple voices on the roles (rather than individual voices only).
