Reading Strategy Task Cards

These 64 task cards target reading comprehension strategies: Visualizing, summarizing, synthesizing, determining importance, making inferences, activating prior knowledge, making connections, questioning, and monitoring comprehension. Task cards are a wonderful way to allow students to be active learners and work cooperatively with a partner or group. These cards are generalized so that they can be used with any reading passage/book and all age/grade groups. Color and black/white versions are included. Each reading strategy also includes a simple poster defining the reading strategy.

How to Use
— Set up literacy centers with different short stories or passages. Students can use the task cards before, during, and after reading.
— Partner students up and have students go back and forth answering and answering questions orally.
— Group students in 3 or 4 to discuss one particular task card orally. Then, use this as a text-dependent question for journal writing.
— Partner students up with games (Connect Four, Scrabble, etc.). Students can take a turn after they answer one of the task cards.
— Lead a guided reading group to discuss specific task cards with students in need. Model a written response to one of the task cards and have the group write the response in their journals.
— Go around the room and have students randomly select a task card for them and their partner to answer. They will discuss, write, and present their response to the class.
— Have students follow up to any of these activities by writing their own task cards and having another group respond to their question.
