Description

Are you tired of your students asking when they will ever use math skills in real life? Are you looking for a fun and engaging project to guide your students in meaningful retrieval practice with multiple math skills for an end of year review (or beginning!). Are you hoping to help develop deeper critical thinking skills, all with a sweet twist? Then this real world snack project is for you!

This project can be used at the end of the year to revisit previously learned tasks from throughout the year. This project is not skill specific so there is some meaningful struggle as student must decide which operations are necessary to complete tasks. It can also be used at the beginning of the year for a fun review of math concepts from previous years. This activity can be done one of two ways:

  • Students work on tasks and check in with the teacher as each task card is completed (answer key provided).
  • Or, students can complete task cards while entering answers into a self-checking Google Form - they cannot move on until they enter the correct answer - some clues are provided!

What You Get:

  • 6 Color Task Cards
  • Answer Key for Task Cards
  • Student Work Pages in Color
  • Student Work Pages B&W
  • Ideas for Further Extension
  • Standards Per Task
  • Google Form in Escape Room Format to Self Check

What Skills Are Covered:

  • Task #1: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Task #2: Find whole number quotients. Write simple expressions. Interpret the remainder.
  • Task #3: Divide unit fractions by whole numbers. Multiply multi-digit whole numbers. Convert measurements.
  • Task #4: Divide unit fractions by whole numbers. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Task #5: Multiply multi-digit whole numbers. Convert measurements.
  • Task #6: Multiply a fraction or a whole number by a fraction. Add and divide decimals to the hundredths.

Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
