What educators are saying
This was a great final project for our simple machines unit. My students loved applying what they had learned.
Every year my 4th graders look forward to designing their own Rube Goldberg machines. This resource was the perfect addition to our lesson packet. Thank you so much for such a great lesson.
Description
Lots of fun and educational too! Good project to use at the end of the school year. Students create a Rube Goldberg Compound Machine that pops a balloon (this will work for making any compound machine), but first they have to fill out a Project Design Idea Form and then a Project Design Form & Blueprint. Once these are all approved, they can begin the fun of constructing the machine.
Students are quick to discover that their blueprints don’t generally work exactly the way the envisioned it. They may see that the placement of the fulcrum is wrong, the force of push is too hard or too easy, or any other issues that need to be addressed. It is also rewarding to hear them talking about their project and using vocabulary words associated with simple machines.

Forms for students

Power Point to introduce the project
